What Makes a Good Gold Paint

A good gold paint should not contain bronze powder, as this type of powder (which is made from copper) can oxidise when exposed to outdoor conditions. The DecorGold paint, for instance, does not include bronze powder; instead, it is made with a blend of coated metal powder and mica pigment. Mica pigment consists of very fine, colored glass particles. The artificially manufactured mica used in DecorGold is of the highest quality and is produced in Germany. This paint is ideal for outdoor use and is available in a variety of colours. The colour-rich gold shade closely resembles the appearance of gold leaf, while those seeking a more subtle finish may prefer the pale gold option.

High-quality gold paint

Apply the paint directly to the surface without using a primer or undercoat. Coverage is approximately 10 square meters per litre. The drying time is about 60 minutes. DecorGold paint is a water-based lacquer that provides a metallic effect. This product is anti-corrosive and environmentally friendly. It has a low odour, is impact-resistant, and retains gloss. Additionally, it is non-yellowing and offers excellent hiding power.

Hot Stamping Foil

Foil stamping is a technique used to apply metallic prints and foils to various surfaces, such as paper or cards, using a heated die and pressure. One of the advantages of this process is the ability to introduce a variety of textures, including glossy, metallic, or matte finishes, all with exceptional precision.

Holographic hot stamping foil differs from other printing methods, like pad printing or silk screening. This is because it does not use ink, allowing the final product to remain unaffected by the texture or colour of the medium being used. This process is not new; it has been in practice for centuries. Traditionally, foil stamping was commonly used to create cards for birthdays and invitations. Over time, however, the technique has evolved, leading to numerous innovations in its application.

Holographic Foil

Holographic foils can enhance the value of any product. Since product packaging is essential, holographic foil adds a distinctive touch of exclusivity and uniqueness to a brand, which in turn boosts brand awareness. The process of applying holographic hot foils involves machines that use pressure and heat to imprint a design onto the foil. These foils can be used on various substrates, including paper and plastic, for both aesthetic appeal and anti-counterfeiting measures. Holographic hot stamping foil is commonly recognised as a crucial element of product design, and the demand for these foils has grown significantly.

What is shellac?

Shellac is an essential natural primer, sanding sealant, and stain-blocking agent. It provides superior protection as a varnish for gilded work and serves as an outstanding indoor sealant for timber. Shellac dries to a striking high-gloss finish. For applications that demand a flatter, less shiny appearance, you can effectively add products containing amorphous silica, such as “Shellac Flat,” to the dissolved shellac.

Furthermore, shellac inherently contains a small amount of wax (3% to 5% by volume) from the lac bug. In specific formulations, this wax is intentionally removed, resulting in what is known as “dewaxed shellac.” This process is crucial for applications where shellac will be topped with another coating, such as paint or varnish, to ensure superior adhesion. While non-dewaxed shellac may appear milky in its liquid state, it dries to a perfectly clear finish.

What Is Gilding?

Gilding is a stunning decorative technique that involves applying a delicate layer of gold to various surfaces, including wood, metal, ceramic, and stone. When an object is gilded, it gains an exquisite quality, earning it the designation of “gilt.” In the West, the tradition of using silver as the base metal for gilding creates breathtaking silver-gilt, or vermeil, pieces that radiate elegance. Meanwhile, in China, the artistry of gilt-bronze shines through, and in the West, it is celebrated as ormolu. With various gilding methods available, this timeless technique transforms ordinary items into extraordinary works of art, captivating the eye and enriching any space.

What to Keep in Mind When Using Instacoll Base

To avoid small holes or dirt particles in the Instacoll Base coat, ensure the surface is 100% dry and free of dirt and grease. If you are applying a layer of paint before gilding, allow the paint to dry completely and then mattify it using a Synthetic Steel Wool Pad. Be cautious with dilution: do not dilute the base more than 5% for brush application and no more than 10% for spray application.

How Should Oxidising Surfaces Be Prepared?

When preparing oxidising or rusting surfaces, such as those made of copper or brass, certain steps must be followed before proceeding with gold plating. First, the surface must be cleaned thoroughly to remove any rust and dust.

Begin by applying a rust-proof varnish, such as epoxy resin varnish, to the metal. Once this layer is dry, apply two coats of a top coat, such as a two-component polyurethane varnish. Be sure to follow the drying and processing instructions provided by the varnish manufacturer.

After achieving a complete varnish build-up, you can apply Kölner Instacoll size for gilding. Once the adhesive has dried, you may proceed with the gold plating process.

What is the Thickness of One Coat of Instacoll Base?

Instacoll Base has a wet layer thickness of approximately 60 to 80 micrometres (µm) and a dry layer thickness of around 40 micrometres (µm). It is important to apply Instacoll Base in a manner that allows it to flow well.

Do I Need Leaf Protection Outdoors?

Cologne leaf protection can be applied to gilding with metal foil or genuine gold leaf, particularly in situations where the surface will be frequently handled and exposed to wear. Real gold leaf is highly weather-resistant and can maintain its beautiful shine for decades without the need for a top coat. However, applying a top coat can dull the shine of the gold leaf, so it is only recommended for metal foil and for gilding that is intended for everyday use.

Why Doesn’t Gold Leaf Stick to the Adhesive?

To effectively lift the gold leaf, the stropping tool needs a bit of grease. One way to achieve this is by rubbing the stropping tool on your cheek or applying some Vaseline to your forearm and then running the stropping tool along it.
