Gold leaf coverage by size

How many gold leaves do I need for my project?

Having the right amount of gold leaf is essential before you start gilding; running out before completing your project will cause the adhesive to dry out.

The amount of gold leaf required for 1 m² is calculated, excluding waste and overlaps. The gilder should assess the percentage of waste based on the complexity of the object and their own experience in applying gold leaf. For instance, if the surface has intricate details and deep crevices, it will require significantly more gold leaf to gild compared to a flat surface of the same size.

Standard coverage for gold leaf applications based on various sizes:

Gold leaf 50x50mm: you will need 460 leafs.

Gold leaf 80x80mm: you will need 180 leafs.

Gold leaf 85x85mm: you will need 160 leafs.

Gold leaf 90x90mm: you will need 140 leafs.

Gold leaf 91,5 x 91,5 mm: you will need 137 leafs.
