Gilding With The Kölner Instacoll Gilding System – Video Tutorial

The Kölner Instacoll Gilding System offers various options for achieving excellent gilding with genuine gold leaf. It is suitable for both exterior and interior applications. It can be used with various materials, including all types of genuine gold leaf, silver leaf, palladium leaf, and white gold.

For a successful gilding project, this adhesive’s drying and open time depend on the material type, ambient air temperature, and humidity levels. The ideal conditions for processing are a temperature range of 15 to 25 °C and humidity levels between 45 and 60%. This information ensures that you are well-prepared for your gilding tasks.

Watch the video below to discover everything you need to know about using Instacoll effectively and achieving a breathtaking gilded finish. Don’t miss the opportunity to elevate your gilding projects to the next level!

WHAT SHOULD YOU PAY ATTENTION TO WITH INSTACOLL BASE?

To avoid small holes or dirt particles in the Instacoll Base coat, the surface should be 100% dry and free of dirt/grease or similar. Even if you are gilding on a layer of paint, let the paint dry longer and mattify the paint with a fine Scotch Brite pad.
Do not dilute the base too much: max. 5% for brush application and max. 10% for spray application.

WHAT IS THE THICKNESS OF ONE COAT OF INSTACOLL BASE?

Instacoll Base has a wet layer thickness of approx. 60-80 µ and a dry layer thickness of approx. 40 µ. Accordingly, Instacoll Base is applied in such a way that it can still flow well.

HOW SHOULD OXIDIZING SURFACES BE PREPARED FOR GOLD PLATING?

For oxidizing or rusting surfaces such as copper or brass, a few things must be observed before gold plating can take place. The surface must be free of rust and dust. The metal is first painted with a rust-proof varnish (e.g. epoxy resin varnish), and then two layers of top coat (e.g. 2-component polyurethane varnish) are applied to the rust-proof varnish. Drying and processing instructions must be observed depending on the varnish manufacturer. After a perfect varnish build-up, the Kölner adhesive for gilding can be applied, and gold plating can be carried out after the drying time.

DO I NEED LEAF PROTECT OUTDOORS

Cologne leaf protection can be applied to gilding with metal foil or gilding with real gold leaf, which needs to be handled a lot. Real gold leaf is very weather-resistant and can shine beautifully for decades without a top coat. Any top coat will take the shine off the gold leaf, so a top coat is only recommended for metal foil and for gilding that is used as an everyday object.

HOW OFTEN CAN I ACTIVATE INSTACOLL BASE?

Cologne Instacoll Base can be activated as often as you like with the activator, regardless of whether the surface was painted a week or a year ago. Be careful with surfaces that have already been gold-plated, as the activator would leave stains that cannot be repaired.

WHY DOESN’T GOLD LEAF STICK TO THE ADHESIVE?

The stropping tool needs a little grease to lift the gold leaf. One option is to rub the stropping tool over your cheek or rub Vaseline onto your forearm and then run the stropping tool along it.
