Rabbit skin glue coarse powder is used to create a strong bond between gold leaf and gesso layers. To make a good mixture of rabbit skin glue, follow these instructions:

  1. Add 100g of rabbit skin glue to 1 litre of water and soak overnight.
  2. The following day put in a double boiler and heat slowly until all the particles are dissolved.
  3. Do not overheat, about 50 degree is the best temperature.
  4. Once all the air bubbles have disappeared, leaving the mixture to cool down and then it is ready to be used.
  5. After use, put the remaining mixture in a refrigerator to last longer, do not use the mixture after seven days.

Bone Glue can also be mixed and stirred in cold water respectively macerate. After complete maceration (approx. 1-2 hours), the glue must be dissolved in a water bath at appr. 60°C.

About Rabbit Skin Glue:
Rabbit Skin Glue is made from shred of skin, which are residues in the production of rabbitskins. Rabbit Skin Glue is more elastic than other skin glues, but the adhesive strength is more less. This is no disadvantage for priming and gilding techniques.
